In a book that never quite gets rolling, Konow, a writer for Guitar World, sets out to give a timeline of heavy metal while answering "three key questions: what went right, what went wrong, and what the hell happened?" He begins in Birmingham, England, which he argues is the birthplace of heavy metal, with its most popular statesman today, Ozzy Osbourne. As a revolt against the hippie movement and in part to save himself from a life of crime, Osbourne formed Black Sabbath. At the same time, Led Zeppelin formed from the "ashes of the Yardbirds," and after finally gathering enough members (Keith Moon of the Who turned them down, quipping that they'd sink "like a lead zeppelin," which is how Jimmy Page decided on the name), held a jam session. Konow continues in a chronological fashion, briefly sketching band bios, triumphs and downfalls. Without exploiting each band's debauchery or disintegration, Konow covers such other metal acts such as Alice Cooper, Kiss, Van Halen, M"tley Cre, Dokken, Def Leppard, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Guns 'n' Roses and many others. The portraits of Alice Cooper and Axl Rose are the most engaging parts of the book. However, the chapters read more like magazine articles than a coherent book. Hardcore metal fans will likely find the book a bit soft and too pop, and they're unlikely to learn any new stories. In the final pages, Konow attempts an analysis of the fall of heavy metal, but by that point, so many bands have risen and fallen that his curt summation is hardly satisfying. This is an inspired personal effort that won't chart.

Adult/High School-This book tells the story of heavy-metal music from its beginning in the late '60s through its precipitous decline in the early '90s. Black Sabbath, the first featured band, got its start in 1969 when its members were just out of high school, a scenario that repeats itself with many of the other groups. With Ozzy Osbourne arguably more popular than ever before, thanks to his family's MTV reality show, teens will enjoy reading how he got into music to escape jail or factory work. Most of the stories follow the same pattern-band struggles; band hits it big; band's success is derailed by money, drugs, and personality conflicts. Some of the groups, like Poison, Ratt, and W.A.S.P, will probably seem laughable to today's teens, while Metallica and the members of Motley Crue are still in the limelight. The author has a chatty, anecdotal style and spares no expense as he shares tales of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Often, those who abused drugs died prematurely, cautionary tales that won't go unnoticed. Several pages of notes show that Konow had firsthand access to many of the musicians. Black-and-white photographs, mainly by the prolific Neil Zlozower, open each chapter. There is no discography. This book will be popular with those who enjoy the heavy-metal genre, as well as with those who want to see how to succeed (or not) in the music business.

This virtual encyclopedia, based on interviews with bands, managers, record executives, girlfriends, and groupies, traces heavy metal from the formation of Black Sabbath in the 1960s to the early 1990s, when the genre suddenly went out of vogue. Special attention is given to the 1980s Los Angeles hair metal scene, and although Metallica is well represented, the 1980s thrash metal scene from whence that band sprung is barely mentioned. Konow relates history well, but he falters at commentary. He dedicates only about ten pages to metal's waning, which seems like a lazy ending in a book that attempts to prove its continuing relevance. Still, this book will nicely flesh out popular music collections and complements Chuck Klosterman's recent memoir-cum-musicological study, Fargo Rock City, and Deena Weinstein's cultural study, Heavy Metal. Recommended.

About the Author
William E. Huxhold is Chairman and Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. From 1975 to 1990 he was Management Information System project manager for the city of Milwaukee, where he implemented one of the first urban geographic systems in
North America. He received a M.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Dayton in 1973. Mr. Huxhold also wrote An Introduction to Urban Geographic Systems, published by Oxford University Press in 1973. Allan G. Levinsohn is an information technology consultant with more than 15 years of
experience managing geographic information. He is an Associate of the Banff Centre for Management, and an advisor to government agencies and companies across Canada. He has also worked in Kenya, China, Japan, Holland, and the U.S. His clients include regional and national government agencies,
municpalities, and resource, utility, engineering, and technology companies. Mr. Levinsohn is well-known for his innovative approaches to GIS planning and design.

"Caveat emptor"/buyer beware.For those fellow customers who want to buy this item because they intend to use it in a Shakespeare class on the college grad school level. Do not, I repeat do not waste your money.Let me explain, this edition does not contain any "glosses," notes in the margin which clarify word use or other language issues. It does not contain any footnotes at all. So there is nothing which you can use for cross-referencing among the plays, this is particularly important when studying Shakespeare's "histories," as they are all related until one continuous story when put together. This edition of the complete works also does not contain any kind of a general introduction about the person of William Shakespeare, his life or historical times. This edition does not contain an introduction to any of the plays.Honestly, this is the first addition of "The Complete Works" that I have ever seen that does not contain all of these things. Some editions I have seen in the past, have better glosses, footnotes and intros that others but they have all had them.I wanted this edition because it was divided into the four logical volumes, comedies, tragedies, histories, & romances & poems, and I wouldn't have to carry around one huge book. However, to charge very nearly 50 dollars, for edition of the complete works of William Shakespeare, that doesn't have margin notes, footnotes and contextual introductions, is a complete release the money. Even if you don't intend to use this to study Shakespearean school, and even if you think you are very familiar with Shakespeare's work, margin glosses footnotes and other contextual information is still very important to remind yourself of salient points of information. You would be better off buying one of the older paperback editions edited by Prof. David Bevington for example of the University of Chicago. There is a six volume and four volume set of the works available. In those all contain the same study aids, I have described above, better in his comprehensive one volume edition of Shakespeare. There also fine editions by the Royal Shakespeare Company available, and Pelican books. Again buyer beware don't waste your cash

I purchased the Kindle version of this book. I bought this particular version of the Complete Works because it comes with free audio, which is excellent to have handy when reading Shakespeare. However, the Table of Contents only exists for the first part of the book--the tragedies. To read a particular play that's a comedy or history (or any of the sonnets)--in other words, 75% of the book--you have to click onto the last "chapter" listed--Titus Andronicus--and page through to find the work you're looking for. What a HUGE pain! If you're buying this on Kindle, might want to find a better version, unless you plan to simply read the book cover to cover every time.

I am a huge Shakespeare fan! HUGE!! I remember toting the "Portable Shakespeare" literature book around with me wherever i went. In 2014, after looking at my dog-eared version of limited collections - i decided to buy the ULTIMATE collection for a mere $1.99.It was wonderful! I was happier than a twister in a trailer park! Whenever there was down-time at my facility, and everyone sat there exchanging bean dip recipes, while talking about dieting at the same time, i'd have my nose in my Kindle reading my favorite plays, exploring new ones as well as sonnets, etc.Fast forward 2016, it had been a few months since i read from my Ultimate collection. I went to the table of contents. And.. there wasn't any. I highlighted "Front Matter" hoping i would find it there? Nope. All that appeared was the beginning of the first comedy, "All's Well that end's well"..okay..I highlighted "Cover" where i could see the cover of the book and swipe right over to the table of contents. Guess what? There i was AGAIN - All's Well that ends well."Like other people have posted in the the one star reviews: It's like reading a data file. You have to go through every single play in order to find what you're looking for.I did the Kindle "video MayDay" asking if this was a problem, and could she help me resolve this issue? She pretended to look for the problem and disconnected us.I thought, okay.. Let's try this again. Guess what? The second "customer service" rep listened, then pretended to "look it up on amazon" herself.. right in the middle of it? She disconnected us.Apparently, this is a problem no one can solve. I tried deleting the book from the carousel, no problem. But you CANNOT delete it from the Cloud and start over. I've tried it. You cannot even remove this worthless file from the Cloud itself. It's stuck there.Thus, i'll have to find a new Shakespeare collection, with an ACTIVE table of contents.Do not waste your money of this.. I have no idea what happened? But Everlasting Flames Publishing Company better get off their Everlasting As** and fix this problem before they lose customers to other companies.Oh, just when i thought i would download other Kindle Editions of Shakespeare from other publishers? Guess What? Many of the Kindle users are having the same problem.Also, if you see a 5 star review regarding the Ultimate Collection? Check very closely. These reviews are mixed in with those who have bought the "HARD COVER EDITION" which seem to be the ones getting the 5 stars.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION! The Kindle edition does not even have a Table of Contents. You want to read Romeo and Juliet - good luck in even finding it. The hard-copy version might be OK - I don't have a copy to check. But this kindle edition is a mess. If you want to read Shakespeare on Kindle, get "William Shakespeare: The Complete Works" based on the 1974 Riverside Edition published by Eireann Press. That is the one I bought after ordering this one and finding how awful it is.

"Studio Anywhere" is a great guide for photographers who want to improve the quality of their images without needing a ton of expensive gear or a permanent studio location. I really enjoyed the book, the author is very specific about how he lit each example picture, even including screenshots of Lightroom settings of how he color graded the pictures and fixed problems.The author covers many different scenarios: low-key portraits, bright and dark product shots, shooting with water, bright sky and dark night portraits... always in tight spots with minimal gear. Keep in mind the author really likes hard light, like rock-hard light from an unmodified speedlight. If you're a fan of soft, subtle lighting, you might not like all of his photos.A few nitpicks: The author frequently refers to speedlights as "bare-bulb strobes". Speedlights have lenses and mirrors that enable their features, they are not bare-bulb strobes. I think he just means "bare flash", meaning no modifier was used. Also he makes a big deal about how superior Neutral Density filters are to High-Speed Sync modes on speedlights, but he compares the two unfairly to make ND filters sound wonderful and HSS sound terrible, using different exposure settings for the two tests. HSS costs about two stops of power, if you put a two-stop ND filter in front of your lens, you will also need an additional two stops of flash power. Anyway, I'm just saying ND filters are not some magical solution to flash sync problems, using them requires more flash power just like HSS does, and ND filters make it harder to change lenses, since you also have to change filters when you do, possibly requiring multiple filters for different size lenses, step-up rings, etc. HSS just works.So, if you're looking for a collection of practical tips for using the world as your studio to take great pictures, "Studio Anywhere" is highly recommended!

I'll be honest. I enjoyed this book the first time I read it, but really considered it only about 1/2 good, since it includes a lot of Lightroom examples and I don't use Lightroom. While the content I read was good and felt it was worth the money, I just considered it a good solid book, but not a standout.However, as I've had this for a few years I continue to gain new knowledge every time I pick it up. For example, Nick's gear is simple, but does the job. It's a clear example of how little you really need to do professional work. Anytime you find yourself "Needing" more photo gear, take a look at Nick's gear and you may find you have more than enough gear to do excellent photography.Then there are the examples. As I grow as a photographer different chapters appeal to me. Nick covers people and products...and those have had different appeal to me at different times. However, whichever subject I find myself interested at the time, I find Nick's book to have something to help me grow in that area.And then there's the extensive Lightroom examples. I haven't made it to using Lightroom yet, however I have now found that I can at least apply many of his principals to my work in Rawtherapee. And once I make it to using Lightroom, I'll bet I can appreciate those even more.I've found myself with the opportunity to have a very small photo studio in my home, and with Nick's book I'm extremely confident that I'll be able to put even that small space to great use.To me, this book has great appeal to someone who may wish to start a photography business. It doesn't cover the travel/landscape/artsy photography. But it DOES cover topics that would be the bread & butter to someone who would like to bring in some money through photography. It covers a lot of corporate type shooting, along with product and portrait photography.I don't usually write reviews...but found myself referencing this book over and over for the past two years...it's good stuff!

The idea behind this book is great - you really don't "need" a studio.However, I am a little disappointed how much the author relies on using "post" to make up for lack of lighting, when in many of examples it would have been easy/possible to add another flash. Obviously we'd all like to not have to carry around that little bit extra gear, but it just seems to go against the whole concept that we do 90% of our shots without a studio. We are not talking run and gun here, we're talking posed sittings, which may or may not have time pressures and baggage allowance issues.On the whole the guidelines and ideas are great, but I do feel the heavy reliance on "Lightroom" to fix what we didn't get on set, is a little off-putting.

Yes, some of this SHOULD be obvious to anyone that has held a camera for a few years...but it's still a good read.Yes, some of this might indeed make you say, "Well, duh." And feel all smug about yourself.And yes, some of this might make you say, "D'oh!" And feel embarrassed that you hadn't figured that out yourself.All in all I think it's a good book.I think it's good for those just starting out, for those with a full studio as a way to see things differently, and for those that HAD a studio ;-) but are looking for ways to make it work without one.

this is one amazing gem of a book about portraiture photography. the author of this wonderful book is extremely talented and knows how to explain it and explain it well he did! I like the style of this book. its like reading a diary/blog and you can see how a professional photographer thinks and works with lighting on various locations with limited budget. this is without a doubt one of the best books that explain working with lighting which is a bit complicated for beginners. also the post-processing tips on Lightroom is quite insightful.I'm glad that I bought this book and I would recommend it to friends and serious armature photographers.
